Question: How are the demographics of Greenland different from Denmark?

Answer:

Answer by Matt T
Well, Denmark’s population is about 91% Danish, and the remaining 9% is comprised of immigrants from Bosnia-Hercegovina, Turkey, Pakistan, India, and Somalia.

Greenland’s population in turn, is about 88% mixed Inuit-Danish or just Inuit, while the other 12% are Danish.

Question: What can be done to stop Japanese whalers from using dishonest means to kill our whales?
The ineffective IWC did not come to any kind of agreement with regard to whaling. Japan has been caught red-handed buying off smaller, mostly African nations with no interest in whaling so they can resume a commercial slaughter. They have are also under suspicion for selling whale meat on the black market in nations that have banned the eating of endangered species. The IWC has allowed them to hunt whales under the guise of “scientific research” which never yields any scientific papers. The problem is that there is no regulatory agency which regulates whaling and enforces the rules to stop poachers and dishonorable lying nations like Japan. Hence we have the Sea Shepherds who try to stop it and Greenpeace who “bears witness” and raises awareness. With nations such as Japan, Iceland and Norway trying to resume a commercial hunt, What can we do stop it and how do we get some sort of agency that will look after the interests of ocean species, who are being hammered?

Question: Where can I find voting results from the 2008 Democratic Primaries among different demographics?
^Title. Basically I would like to see a breakdown of voting results between Obama, Clinton, and possibly Edwards for different demographics like low vs high income, ethnicities (I’m especially interested in this), and different age groups. Does anyone know where I could find such stats or do they not have them in the primaries? Thanks in advance.

Keynote Speaker Greta Christina discusses what the atheist movement learn from the LGBT movement? The atheist movement is already modeling itself on the LGBT movement in many ways: most obviously with its focus on coming out of the closet. What else can the Atheist movement learn from the LGBT movement both from its successes and its failures? For those who have heard Greta Christina speak at SSA conferences in the past: this is a longer, significantly more fleshed-out version of the talk she gave at both Stanford and Harvard. In this talk, Greta discusses coming out; making atheism a safe place to come out into; defusing the ongoing battles between the firebrands and the diplomats in our movement; avoiding squabbles about language and self-definition; making our movement more diverse; preparing for success and the mainstreaming that will almost certainly accompany it; and other lessons that can be learned from the history of the LGBT movement.

Chapter 14 (Assets & Demographics – Part 2 of 2): Having examined our nations current, never-before-seen level of debt, as well as our failure to save, we now move on to look at our assets. Key Concept 8 is introduced, that debts are fixed, but assets are variable, sometimes gaining and sometimes losing. Dr. Martenson examines Americas assets, especially in light of our current demographic situation. The effect of the baby boomer generation is specifically considered, with the conclusion that the next 20 years are going to be completely unlike the last twenty years. www.chrismartenson.com

Question: Study finds environmentalists meaner and more likely to cheat and steal from others – what about this science?
.
I know how enthusiastic the environmentalists on YA and the web generally are about peer-reviewed scientific studies, so I wondered what they would make of this finding: [QUOTE]

———————————-
“”Do Green Products Make Us Better People is published in the latest edition of the journal Psychological Science. Its authors, Canadian psychologists Nina Mazar and Chen-Bo Zhong, argue that people who wear what they call the “halo of green consumerism” are less likely to be kind to others, and more likely to cheat and steal

The pair said their findings surprised them, having thought that just as “exposure to the Apple logo increased creativity”, according to a recent study, “given that green products are manifestations of high ethical standards and humanitarian considerations, mere exposure” to them would “activate norms of social responsibility and ethical conduct”.

Dieter Frey, a social psychologist at the University of Munich, said the findings fitted patterns of human behaviour. “At the moment in which you have proven your credentials in a particular area, you tend to allow yourself to stray elsewhere,” he said”
———————————————-

So what’s your opinion of this peer-reviewed scientific study? Are you going with the scientists on this one, or your own “gut feeling”?

Ottawa Mike -

Well said. I don’t think this applies to all those who have concerns with the environment, but i do think it is relevant to that large subset that look to blame everyone else for the planet’s supposed state rather than looking at themselves.

This article gives ‘research’ a bad name, for me. you can’t measure morality with some phschology experiment. i suppose the green people were proven to be 12.64% less moral people?
‘Research’ gives people the ability to ‘prove’ some stupid generalisations
